William Pickles Lecture 2013: For they are born for another time.

چکیده
I want to dedicate this lecture to the memory of Helen Lester. Helen was wonderful in shaping her words. She will live on in our hearts for what she achieved, just as William Pickles has left a lasting legacy. From his country practice in Wensleydale and his interest in epidemiology he brought the values of primary care to an academic world where secondary care dominated. Half a century later, the secondary ethos still tends to rule in the university arena. I am the only GP on a Council of 34 medical school deans. I will argue that a readjusted balance, away from the dominant secondary care context of medical education, is needed to produce doctors fit for future health care. The honour of presenting this lecture led me to reflect on a mantra I have frequently used:

. . . but now what? Some unresolved problems of training for general practice.
WILLIAM Pickles died over 20 years ago in 1969. Nevertheless it is not difficult to get a clear idea of the sort of man and doctor that Pickles was. His concern for his patients and his enthusiasm for research and learning shine through the pages of his writings, and his life has been sensitively portrayed for us by John Pemberton.I His achievements over the years were great particularly his co...

In an important and provocative editorial, Dr Roger Ladouceur, my colleague at Canadian Family Physician, lamented the decline of generalism among family physicians, including many recent graduates.1 In response to this editorial, Thomas Freeman and Stephen Wetmore challenged our discipline and our national College2 to confront this emerging identity crisis in family medicine.3 In the great tra...

THE SUBJECT OF THE PICKLES LECTURE The archives* of William Pickles’ personal and professional papers reveal him as a ‘family man’: his marriage was long and happy, and he knew each of his patients intimately. He was, in Aysgarth, a ‘father figure’, who was consistently committed to the community he served for many years, and who went the extra mile to help them; something that we would normall...

Introduction I was a privilege to be invited to deliver the William Pickles Lecture this year. He has always been a hero of mine, and his book, Epidemiology in country practice,1 has been a source of inspiration. The introductory chapter of his book sets the scene for this lecture — he describes the population at risk, assesses their vulnerabilities, and then carries out meticulous and detailed...
متن کاملGeneralization of Canonical Correlation Analysis from Multivariate to Functional Cases and its related problems
In multivariate cases, the aim of canonical correlation analysis (CCA) for two sets of variables x and y is to obtain linear combinations of them so that they have the largest possible correlation. However, when x and y are continouse functions of another variable (generally time) in nature, these two functions belong to function spaces which are of infinite dimension, and CCA for them should b...
